The Charity Finance VAT & Tax Conference ran on 11 November 2008 at the QEII Conference Centre in Westminster.

The day focused on ways you can save money on your tax bill and maximising your recoverable VAT through clever forward-planning.

The day began with a keynote address from Mathieu Mori, policy advisor at the Charity Tax Group who discussed current and future UK and EU charity tax developments, including a brief discussion on the consultation currently looking at whether charities should fully enter the VAT system.

Next followed a presentation from Jeremy Sherwood of HM Treasury on where the Treasury currently stands on policies relating to the not-for-profit sector.

For most of the rest of the day delegates were offered a choice of sessions.

Areas covered include:

  • Property
  • Fundraising and events
  • Trading subsidiaries
  • Business / non-business and partial exemptions
  • Cultural exemption
  • Donated goods and services
  • VAT and tax for membership organisations
  • Corporate partnerships
  • Grant vs contracts and
  • Staff costs and PAYE

Finally, the day concluded with a recovery question and answer session.  Delegates were invited to submit in advance or bring along questions relating to their charity’s activities and lack of clarity regarding the tax or VAT implications of them.
